by Drew Daywalt
pictures by Oliver Jeffers

This book is a #1 bestseller and I know why. It's funny and original and by acclaimed author and illustrator Oliver Jeffers.

When the crayons in the library get worn out, it's always the red and blue that are missing. Do they get stolen? Do they break more easily? No - this books let's each crayons speak for itself.

Think of how often you use the color red? And whose favorite color is blue (most boys!). This hilarious tale written by Drew Daywalt and illustrated by Oliver Jeffers is fun, fun, fun!

Teachers, this book is ideal for a persuasive letter writing lesson.

Nelson Mandela by Nadir Nelson

Nelson  Mandela is  a very famous South African hero.  He is almost 95 years old.  The author, Kadir Nelson writes a beautiful story of the struggles and triumphs of this one-time president of South Africa.  With soft colorful pictures, Kadir shows Nelson Mandela as a child and later  as a prisoner.  Mandela spent 27 years in jail.  He peacefully fought for justice and equality in his homeland.  Read about the bravery and perseverance of this great man who is now in the hospital nearing the end of his life.

You can get the book at your local public library.  I hope you will be inspired like I was to stand up for equality and justice for all people.   Your parents can read to you the note at the end of the book that further explains Nelson Mandela's life.

Miss Daisy is Crazy!

I love Dan Gutman's books such as "The Baseball Card Adventures" series and "The Kid who Ran for President."  His "Weird School" series is very popular with my 2nd and 3rd graders.  I decided to start with #1.

Miss Daisy is Crazy by Dan Gutman (2004) - Weird School series -  84 pages   Grade Level 2.5 (O)

Imagine a school with a dumb teacher who can’t even read or add.  A. J.’s new 2nd grade teacher, Miss Daisy, can’t even spell the word read!  A. J. is a kid who doesn’t like school and would rather be home playing video games.  Even if you like school, you’ll enjoy this very funny book about a zany teacher and a joke-cracking student.  Read “Miss Daisy is Crazy!” to find out if A.J. and his friends turn their schools into “Video Game Elementary.”
